SYLVANA BURNS

Sylvana Burns (b. 1994) is a London based Mexican artist whose work rotates around the female body, its representation and sexuality as a form of existence in itself. The work is a constant search in which the artist comes to terms with the burden of being meaning, specifically being meaning as a female. 

 

It is no understatement to say that the female body has been highly looked at and sexualized in our society for millennia within the arts, religion and science. With this in mind, Burns utilizes the body and the idea of the historical nude to question its expression through a contemporary female eye/I. 

 

As the nude in history and in art has been mainly manifested through male eyes, Burns attempts to redefine the body through a female perspective which is inevitably clouded by the learned visual language of that history. As an artist, herein lies her main challenge and engine; that is, to use that historic language and subvert it by reappropriating it through a new visual translation. 

 

Burns’ practice is that of an anthropological study where she draws back from the past to understand the present ideals of the body and how these came into being. From her experience as a woman, she sees the body as an interchangeable contradiction; the body as a subject and an object, freedom and restrain, beauty and horror.

Sylvana Burns (1994) es una artista mexicana con base en Londres cuyo trabajo gira en torno al cuerpo femenino, su representación y la sexualidad como una forma de existencia en sí misma. Su obra es una búsqueda constante en la que el artista acepta la carga de ser Mujer y sus múltiples significados.

 

El cuerpo femenino ha sido extensivamente inspeccionado y sexualizado en nuestra sociedad durante siglos en las artes, la religión y la ciencia. El desnudo en la historia y en las artes se ha manifestado principalmente a través de ojos masculinos. Con esto en mente, Burns utiliza el cuerpo y la idea del desnudo histórico para cuestionar su expresión a través de su interpretación y así re definir el cuerpo femenino a través de una perspectiva personal.

 

Como artista, aquí radica su principal búsqueda; utilizar el lenguaje aprendido a lo largo de la historia creado principalmente por hombres y transformarlo en una nueva traducción visual. Su práctica es la de un estudio antropológico en el que se remonta al pasado para comprender los ideales presentes del cuerpo y cómo surgieron. Desde su experiencia de genero ve el cuerpo en una contradicción constante donde este se vuelve sujeto como objeto, libertad como represión hasta un punto radical donde se encuentran el horror y la belleza.
